President Claudia Sheinbaum informed this morning about the agreements reached regarding tariffs during her call with U.S. President Donald Trump, describing the conversation as 'very respectful.' From the National Palace, the president announced the products coming from Mexico that will not incur tariffs until April 2, according to what Trump announced as part of the trade agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada (USMCA).
In his message, Trump praised the relationship with Mexico and highlighted the joint work at the border in preventing illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking. Sheinbaum thanked Trump for the recognition and reaffirmed the unprecedented collaboration between both countries, especially on issues of migration, security, and control of fentanyl and weapons.
Sheinbaum mentioned that for her, the most important thing is her people and the need for collaboration on equal terms. Previously, she had announced an event at the Zócalo in Mexico City to inform the population about Mexico's response, which will now be held as a festival featuring musical groups.
Regarding the deadline of April 2 to stop the tariffs, Sheinbaum pointed out that it coincides with Trump's announcement of reciprocal tariffs for the world. In the event that this includes Mexico, the president explained that having a trade agreement would allow the country to maintain a tariff-free relationship, thus avoiding potential impacts.
